[06|14] Ein „weiter so“ ist im Hinblick auf den enormen Ressourcenverbrauch, den markt- und wachstumsorientierte Wirtschaftssysteme verursachen, nur bedingt bis gar nicht möglich. Der im Jahr 2012 an der Universität Flensburg ins Leben gerufene Forschungsbereich Transformationsdesign hat zum Ziel, Lösungen und alternative Herangehensweisen jenseits tradierter Denkmuster auszumachen – und aufzuzeigen. In einem Artikel im Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin (Heft 39/2012) bringt der Ideengeber und Initiator Professor Harald Welzer die Idee auf den Punkt:
Designern käme nicht mehr die Aufgabe zu, unablässig zusätzliche Dinge in die Welt zu bringen, sondern die, die man nicht braucht, aus der Welt zu schaffen. Also: nicht eine coole Flasche für ein Mineralwasser aus Fidschi entwerfen, sondern den Hinweis auf den nächsten Wasserhahn.
Grenzen des Wachstums
Dass das derzeitig vorherrschende und weltweit um sich greifende Wirtschaftswachstums-System an seine Grenzen stößt, wird deutlich, führt man sich einige Zahlen vor Augen:
- Der Energieverbrauch hat sich allein im 20. Jahrhundert ver-16-facht
- Die Produktion ist im gleichen Zeitraum um das 40-fache gestiegen
- Die Wirtschaftsleistung ist in dieser Zeit (global) um das 14-fache gewachsen
Diese Zahlen zu lesen, ist für die meisten von uns nichts Neues – eine Veränderung unseres Verhaltens ist jedoch ebenso wenig in Sicht. Das Fach Transformationsdesign hat aber eben das zum Ziel: Veränderungen in der Gesellschaft durch neu ästhetische Strategien zu erreichen.
Ästhetische Strategien
Das oben stehende Zitat zeigt deutlich auf, worum es laut Professor Welzer beim Transformieren einer Gesellschaft gehen soll. Redesignen möchte er aber zusätzlich das bestehende Verhältnis von Rohstoff zu Erzeugnis und unser grundsätzliches Designverständnis schlechthin. Design sei demzufolge mehr als nur eine Formensprache, unter deren elegante Formen sich vielfach verberge, welche menschlichen und umweltzerstörerischen Katastrophen wir in Kauf nähmen. Form und Funktion oder marktgerechte Produkte als alleinige Maßstäbe guten Designs reichen als Kategorien dann nicht mehr aus.
Einige Beispiele
Nur drei bis fünf Prozent der Gesellschaft sind nötig, um die Gesellschaft zu verändern, gibt sich Professor Welzer in einem Vortrag während der GLOBALart-Academy im Jahr 2013 überzeugt. Wie eine so transformierte Gesellschaft aussehen könne, ließe sich schon heute anhand einfacher Beispiele erkennen. Diese veranschaulichen außerdem, dass es sich hier keinesfalls um das Missverständnis einer drögen ökodiktatorischen Pflichtveranstaltung handele. Repair Cafés, in denen Produkte kostenlos repariert werden, gehören ebenso dazu wie der um sich greifende Sharing-Gedanke oder die Upcycling-Initiativen zahlreicher Menschen. Oder um es mit Professor Welzers Worten zu sagen:
Zu entscheiden bleibt nur, ob dieser Wandel by design or by disaster verläuft. Ich wäre für Design. Transformationsdesign. Fangt doch bitte schon mal an damit.
